Bobby Bodford hosted Michael Dougherty and I at his home/farm/Dr. Dolittle Home for Needy Animals for a planning session for The Producers. His animals include Hercules, a 4000 lb fence jumping steer, Ginny, a donkey/mule who sounds like she has asthma, a blind horse, various goats and sheep and a horse with hooves that curl up like elf shoes. Quite the menagerie.
We are all looking forward to starting The Producers - and I am now trying to figure out how to put Hercules in the show somehow.
Looking forward to seeing The Producers cast next Monday at 7:00.

Intrigue In The Real Von Trapp Family
Thanks Mickey for this article from the New York Times

Johannes and Sam Von Trapp, right, cross-country skiing at their Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont.
STOWE, Vt. — When Sam von Trapp, the grandson of Maria, the singing nun made famous by “The Sound of Music,” graduated from college, his father offered him a deal: Sam could do whatever he wanted for 10 years before he had to return home here to run the family’s ski lodge.
When Mr. von Trapp finally returned to take over from his father, Johannes, he had had quite a decade: teaching skiing in Aspen, modeling for Ralph Lauren, surfing in Chile and even making People magazine’s America’s Top 50 Bachelors list in 2001. Recently, he sat in a dark office at the Trapp Family Lodge, the inn his grandmother started, trying to decide what to do with some old curtains.
It is hard for anyone to untangle family history and allegiances during the holidays. When your last name is von Trapp, and Americans claim you as part of their own legacy, that task is just that much harder.
That legacy weighs on Mr. von Trapp even as he considers something as mundane as curtains.
In “The Sound of Music,” the beloved 1965 movie, Maria, the governess played by Julie Andrews, turned old curtains into play clothes for the seven von Trapp children, just as the real Maria had done. Mr. von Trapp figured that if he sold von Trapp draperies on eBay, he might turn a nice little profit.
“Nobody has the level of commitment I do,” said Mr. von Trapp, now 36, but with the energy and earnestness of a teenager. “Nobody has as much to gain.”
Despite the nostalgic mist around “The Sound of Music," Mr. von Trapp is taking over a business for a family that has had its share of ups and downs and disagreements.
When the von Trapps arrived in the United States in 1938, they settled in Pennsylvania and made money by singing baroque and folk music. By 1942, the family had bought a farm in Stowe. Maria rented out rooms in the house when the von Trapps were on tour singing.
Still, Johannes von Trapp, the 10th and youngest child, remembers growing up relatively anonymously in a quiet, strict home. That began to shift after the 1959 Broadway production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music,” and when the movie opened, everything changed.
“You could no longer give your name anywhere without people saying ‘Oh, are you ... ?’ ” said the elder Mr. von Trapp, now 69. “The film, for better or for worse, made us a mass market commodity.”
The von Trapps have never directly profited from the film or Broadway musical: Maria, whose husband died in 1947, sold the rights to the family story to a German film company in the mid-1950s for just $9,000. Johannes and now his son run the cross-country skiing lodge that trades on the family’s fame with Austrian food, waitresses wearing dirndls and pictures of the family, but not a single poster from the movie.
“The Sound of Music was great, but it was an American version of my family’s life,” said Johannes, who no longer sings, although he still has a pleasant, reedy bass voice. “It wasn’t what we were. I just got tired of being cast as a ‘Sound of Music’ person.”
The family legacy has been particularly onerous for him.
People would ask about Liesl, and he would have to point out that his eldest sibling was not 16 going on 17, but 54 in 1965 — and male. They would ask whether he was Kurt or Friedrich, and he would have to explain that his father and mother had three children together that were not portrayed in the movie, and he was the youngest. His mother was presented as a near-saint in the movie; in real life, she was difficult and domineering, people who knew her said.
By 1969, he had graduated from Dartmouth, completed a master’s degree from the Yale school of forestry and was planning on an academic career in natural resources. He returned to Stowe to put the inn’s finances in order, and ended up running the place. He tried to leave, moving to a ranch in British Columbia in 1977 and staying a few years, then moving to a ranch in Montana. But the professional management in Stowe kept quitting. “Now I’m stuck here,” he said.
As long as Maria was alive, the von Trapp siblings grudgingly got along.
“She was a very strong minded, strong willed woman,” said Marshall Faye, a baker who has worked at the lodge for more than 30 years. “She ruled the family. Anything they did had to have her blessing.”
But after she died in 1987, the family members — 32 of whom owned stock in the lodge — started to fracture. Johannes engineered a buyout in 1994 and resolved a lawsuit with relatives in 1999. “I honestly resented the fact that none of my older siblings could’ve took over the business,” he said. “Then I could’ve run off and done whatever I wanted to do.”
If he had to run a lodge, he wanted a quiet, dignified one. He enjoys events like the Friday night wine tastings, where he can sip Grüner Veltliners and greet guests in the patrician fashion he learned as a boy.
But in the off season, the “Sound of Music” bus tours arrive, full of seniors who line their purses with cellophane so they can stuff them with Austrian pastries at the breakfast buffet. He recently discovered that his gift shop had been selling a stuffed goat that sings “The Lonely Goatherd.”
“Isn’t that awful?” he said, sighing. “My staff hid it from me for months. But it does sell.”
Since the buyout, the lodge has been profitable, if not enormously so, he said. It provides well for his family — his wife, Lynne, whom he met when she was a singing waitress at the lodge, and his children, Sam and Kristina, 38, who recently moved back to Stowe and built a house on the 2,400-acre property.
For Sam, a generation removed from “The Sound of Music,” the burden of being a von Trapp is lighter. He has seen the movie only twice, and is the child of a Vermonter, not the son of an Austrian baron. "For him, there were all those issues in the family, too, that came along with that little leap into fame," Sam said of his father.
Since his return, the younger Mr. von Trapp has made snow making his big project, spending nights on the snow-covered meadows in 10-degree weather, doing the heavy manual work it requires. He plans to bring back holiday singalongs and to advertise the lodge during ABC’s broadcast of “The Sound of Music” on Sunday, which his father once opposed.
The movie is “one of the reasons — the big one — that people come here,” said Ron Tanner, a marketing consultant who works at the lodge. “The TV ad will be to say, ‘Hey, the next generation has taken over the Trapp Family Lodge.’ ”
Early on a Friday night, Johannes slipped into the bar and ordered a glass of blaufränkisch, an Austrian red wine, and a hamburger without a bun.
The piano player, John Cassel, was playing a different song for each regular visitor. He plays Scott Joplin’s “Solace” for Sam, and pieces by the Cuban singer Silvio Rodriguez for Sam’s fiancée, Elisa. Johannes’s song is “Desperado,” the Eagles’ ballad.
“It’s very rewarding when you see a lounge full of happy people and a pianist plays someone’s song, my song,” Johannes said.
With Sam taking over, “I’ll get back to Montana,” he said. “I’ve sort of done my thing here. Now it’s up to my son to take it from here.”

This Incredible Tapestry That Is America!
In his first interview on Meet the Press since winning the election, President-elect Obama discussed his plans to make an impact through arts and culture at the White House, saying that they are "thinking about the diversity of our culture and inviting jazz musicians and classical musicians and poetry readings in the White House so that, once again, we appreciate this incredible tapestry that's America."

Breaking News!
Unidentified sources report that Eric Tysinger, a big tough stage manager who has worked with NCSF and is now with Triad Stage, has recently turned into an ooey-gooey marshmallow. The cause of this personality shift is apparently linked to the fact that Eric is now permanently wrapped around the finger of a new Greensboro resident, Emma Grace. Attempts at removing Eric from said finger have been unsuccessful and it is assumed that this is now a permanent condition.

Advocacy Works
ARTS North Carolina is pleased to report that the Joint Select Committee on Arts Education has voted affirmatively on two recommendations included in the Committee's report.
The Committee recommends that the State Board of Education shall modify the high school graduation requirements to include one required credit of arts education. Draft legislation can be found on page 12 of the Committee's report at www.artsnc.org/advocacy.
The Committee strongly recommends continued funding for the A+ Schools Program, a whole-school reform model that views the arts as fundamental to teaching and learning in all subjects.
What does this all mean? A Committee of Senators, Representatives, and citizens appointed by Speaker Joe Hackney and President Pro Tem Marc Basnight have studied arts education and its value to public education. They have agreed that arts education must be a statewide priority, and they are recommending legislation that ensures the graduation requirement. Members of the Joint Select Committee will introduce legislation in both the House and Senate when the General Assembly convenes in January, and the legislation will be referred to the appropriate Education Committees where discussion begins anew. The Education Committees of both the Senate and the House will need to adopt the legislation, then the bills move to the full House and Senate. Both the House and the Senate must pass the legislation for it to take effect. ARTS North Carolina, working closely with the five statewide discipline organizations, will coordinate advocacy strategies as the bills begin the long process of becoming a law.
The Committee's report is only the beginning of a long and winding road that will require a spirit of unity, commitment, and belief that will be tested as bills makes their way through the General Assembly.

Call to Action
TAKE ACTION NOW
Arts Education Select Committee to Vote
The North Carolina House and Senate appointed a Joint Select Committee on Arts Education in December 2007 to consider requiring a high school education requirement in the arts and other arts education policies that are essential to a 21st Century education. A copy of the full report can be found at www.artsnc.org/advocacy.
ARTS North Carolina believed that the Committee would discuss recommendations at the November 18th meeting and meet again on December 9th to vote. They received word late Friday that the Committee will vote on the above referenced report this coming Tuesday, November 18th, in Raleigh at the Legislative Building in Room 1225. The meeting will be held from 10 AM until noon, and all advocates should make every effort to attend. You will not be required to speak.
Arts advocates must pack the room and halls of the General Assembly to clearly send the message that this is an essential vote and that the arts industry fully supports the Committee's recommendations. Adopting this report is the next step in requiring the new high school graduation framework to include an arts credit. If this report is adopted, legislation will be introduced in January mandating the arts credit.
If you cannot attend the meeting, click here and you will be guided in sending your encouragement to the Committee members to vote "yes" on this recommendation on Tuesday. Please take action no later than 7pm on Monday, November 17th.

Kim, Lee & Jennifer Become Von Trapp Children for a Day
In 1993, Kim Harrison (Elsa), Lee Willard (Max) and I traveled with The Choral Society of Greensboro on a tour to Europe. One of the stops was 3 days in Salzburg, Austria - the location of the 1965 Sound of Music filming. It's hard to tell which is the bigger tourist attraction in Salzburg - The Sound of Music locations or the birthplace of Mozart. We were lucky enough to have plenty of fun with both and of course had to have our pictures made in all of the SoM locations.
The Snow-Capped Swiss Alps - in July

Leopoldskron - The Estate That Served as the
Exterior of the Von Trapp Family Home
The "Do-Re-Mi" Steps
The "I Have Confidence" Fountain
Playing in our "Play Clothes"
Thankfully not made of curtains.
Yes, Peggy Clapper was there also - but wasn't playing with us. I guess she was busy at the abbey.

Our Own Sarah Palin

Our Jane Ashley Raborn (SoM's Louisa) decided to go with the "down do" in portraying one of her favorites, Sarah Palin, for a school event.
Don't worry, if I hear her droppin' her g's, talking about Joe Six-Pack, or doing any excessive winking, I will demand an intervention.
Love you, Jane Ashley!

Emma Grace Tysinger
Congratulations to our friends Eric & Teresa Tysinger on the birth of their beautiful daughter Emma Grace on Friday. Eric is currently the stage manager for Triad Stage, and is a long time friend of HPCT (he can reach the high places at my office) and a dear friend to many in the Triad theatre community.

As you can tell from the picture, Emma has already got her Daddy securely wrapped around her little finger.

Food Shortage
From Triad Health Project...
Due to the current tough economy having an impact on our client family assistance requests, we are currently experiencing a heightened need for any non-perishable food item donations for both our Greensboro and High Point client food pantries. Reclamation programs such as Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina and Greensboro Urban Ministries are strapped for what THP is able to receive from them and give to our clients (typically 2 tons each month). Healthy items that can be easily prepared can be dropped off at either THP location - 801 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, or 620 English Street, High Point - Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5pm. For more information on donating furniture items or food, or how you might be able to organize a food drive on THP's behalf, contact Shane Burton at 336-275-1654, ext. 26, or sburton@triadhealthproject.com.
From Jennifer...
Can we help?
I will transport any items brought to the HPCT office to Triad Health Project's High Point office. Feel free to bring non-perishable food items to Sound of Music rehearsals or during the day, drop them off at the HPCT office (feel free to leave them outside the door if I am not in the office) before October 29th.

Candidates Positions on the Arts
Since I never get tired of politics, I have posted links in the right hand column, under Arts Advocacy, to candidates' position statement on the arts, arts education and arts & commerce.
Two of our gubernatorial candidates have now posted their positions on their websites (Libertarian candidate Michael Munger has not posted a position statement) as has Barack Obama. There is no position statement posted on John McCain's website. But I will keep checking and will add it if he posts one.

Save The Date - October 25th
On October 25th, Barnes & Noble's Oak Hollow Mall store will be hosting a fundraiser for HPCT from 9 am - 9 pm. At this fundraiser, HPCT will receive a percentage (up to 20%) of cafe and book sales for anyone who turns in a voucher. The vouchers will be available soon, but for now, plan on doing some early Christmas shopping at B & N on that date. We need lots of volunteers to help promote HPCT to the B & N shoppers. If you are available to volunteer anytime during October 25th, please let me know.In addition to the fundraising opportunities, we have been asked to perform musical numbers from THE SOUND OF MUSIC. I hope that many cast members will be able to join us that day. It's a great opportunity to plug our show. Check your calendars and we will set the schedule soon.
Thanks for your help.

A Child’s Christmas in Wales is Dylan Thomas’s fond remembrance of growing up in Wales during Christmastime. We’ll recreate the world of his small town -- family, friends and neighbors -- and use his short narrative to create a play. Get your sleds out, start baking those Christmas goodies and join us in a playmaking project sure to get you in the Christmas spirit! Using simply homemade props and costumes scrounged from our closets, we will stage a performance fit for the Holiday season. We will perform on the final day of class for family and friends in the morning and at a local retirement community in the afternoon.
To Register, please send the information below, with your check made payable to High Point Community Theatre to P.O. Box 1152, High Point, NC 27261

Georgia Peyton Falke
Congratulations to Elizabeth & Kurt Falke on the birth of Georgia Peyton, born at 5:10pm on Sept. 14, 2008 (after more than 36 hours of labor).
Georgia has already made her HPCT stage debut as she came along for the ride with her newly expecting Mom as a Hot Box Girl in March's Guys & Dolls.
Georgia is having to spend a couple of days in the NICU under the bilirubin lights for jaundice. But hopefully will be home with her Mom & Dad soon. But with her shades, she looks like she's getting in some practice for beach time.

Welcome to The Sound of Music Cast
We had the first read-thru of the SOM script on Sunday and it was great to see everyone together. I can't wait to get started on the music. This promises to be a fantastic production.
A special welcome to our HPCT newcomers. Of our 63 cast members, 31 are making their HPCT debut.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC Cast List
Thanks to all 172 of you who auditioned for THE SOUND OF MUSIC. We could have easily cast the childrens' roles in this show 10 times. It is amazing to see the depth of talent in our young actors. Please know that due to this great turn out, a year-round children's theatre program in High Point has moved to the top of my priority list.
And what great choices for the adult roles as well. While there were many difficult decisions to make, the artistic staff certainly was thrilled to have so many options.
Please know if you were not cast, that I am so appreciative of the time and talent you brought to the auditions. And that your name will be placed on our list for future auditions.
If you were cast, please email jblevins@hpcommunitytheatre.org as soon as possible, signifying that you have seen the cast list and are accepting your role. The first company meeting and read-thru will be Sunday, September 14th from 2 - 5 for everybody. All cast members under driving age should have a parent accompany them to the company meeting which will last approximately 30 minutes. We will then read the play. We have an exciting cast and will have an incredible production.
Congratulations to THE SOUND OF MUSIC Cast...

From Arts North Carolina
Without editorial comment (as hard as that is for me), I would like to pass along some information that I received today from Arts North Carolina from the Gubernatorial debate.
What follows is a transcript of the portion of last night's debate that focused on the arts in North Carolina:
Cullen Browder: Let's move on to another economic-related question. We got a lot of questions across the state related to the arts here in North Carolina. I think this was representative of a lot of those questions. It's from Ira David Wood, a very well-known actor, theatre director here in Raleigh: "North Carolina is often referred to as 'The State of the Arts' because the arts generate a great deal of money in and for North Carolina. How will you create policy and support funding to focus on recruitment and retention of creative industries and small businesses here in North Carolina?"
Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue: That's the future of America, not just North Carolina: the creative class. We all know that. And the mayor is correct: you can't--can no longer just depend on the old tax system and the old way of doing things. You've really got to look to the future. North Carolina has a tremendous legacy of arts. We've got the School of the Arts. A couple of weeks ago, I visited with the Film Leadership Team there. It's remarkable what's going on: the Museum of Art here, the wonderful, wonderful arts and music and cultural opportunities we have not just in Raleigh, but in Durham and this whole Triangle area, throughout the state are critical. I've got such a track record on investment in the arts from across North Carolina, in every community. It's part and parcel of who we are as a people. And we not only have to celebrate it and honor it, we have to keep growing it. And so, as governor, as the next governor of this state, you will see me highly engaged, not just in the state facilities for arts and cultural resources, but across North Carolina, community after community. That old community arts grassroots program that some of us loved so much in the '90s, you know, if there is ever a way to fund that and put it back in, we ought to do that. Because that's how little kids across North Carolina begin to get hooked on the arts and hooked on music.
Mayor Pat McCrory: Well, I think the arts do play an important role in our quality of life, but the arts won't survive if we don't have jobs. And right now jobs has to be our top priority. And I'm more worried about, for example, the farmer who's paying incredible feed prices, a lot of it due to incredible ethanol pressures, and being able to pay that feed prices. And my main focus will be to help those farmers and, because, and to help the manufacturing plants and to help the financial industry create jobs, because it is those people who then pay for the arts and then pay for the extras that add to our quality of life. But if we don't have a strong sector, private sector in creating new jobs, we aren't going to have the arts, because they're the ones who pay the bills to help train people in the arts and to also have wonderful artists throughout our cities and towns in North Carolina.
ARTS North Carolina is still seeking more formal policy statements from the candidates and I will pass them along as I receive them.
