Advocates Needed

At Arts Day in Raleigh a couple of weeks ago, we learned that the NC State Board of Education is going to standardize requirements for graduation across the state. However, they have not included an arts requirement for graduation. And if the arts are not required for a student to graduate from high school, then there goes the programming and funding for the arts in elementary and middle schools too!

The arts are important to education and to the future of our city, county, and state. If you agree, please write members of the SBE and join the movement to add an arts requirement for high school graduation.

If you are willing to to write members of the State Board of Education or would like additional information, please email jblevins@hpcommunitytheatre.org and I will forward addresses and more info to you.

A Great Lady

Esther Culp, one of HPCT's greatest and longest friends, died last night after suffering a massive stroke a week ago. At 88 and 1/2 yrs young, she was a vital and strong woman and was an audience member at EVERY HPCT performance. I loved seeing her in the lobby after the performance where she would always give me a big hug and say "This was the best one yet."

Our thoughts and prayers are with her children, Frosty & Catharine, Rob & Susan & Judy, her grandchildren and her many friends. She was a grand lady and will be missed by all of High Point.

A Few Good Men

Thanks to all who auditioned for THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER - Great turnout and lots of difficult decisions for Dan.

While we have more than enough very talented folks to cast all the roles, we can already tell we are going to need 3-4 more males (older teenagers or adults) to do some cameo roles - mainly the prison guard and prisoners. We will be able to work these actors into the show the very last week - so not much rehearsal time required.

It's a great way for some newcomers to get their feet wet - or some of you old things to be involved in the show without having to commit a lot of rehearsal time.

If you know anyone who might be interested - ask them to call me at 882-2542 or email jblevins@hpcommunitytheatre.org

The cast list will be announced on Wednesday.

Thanks,

Jennifer

P.S. On a personal note - my sister Jane is critically ill in the ICU at HP Hospital. Currently on a ventilator and we are hopeful but not overly optimistic about her recovery. Please keep us in your prayers.

THE STORY: Sheridan Whiteside, having dined at the home of the Stanley’s, slips on their doorstep, breaking his hip. A tumultuous six weeks of confinement follow. The Stanley living room is monopolized by the irascible invalid; ex-convicts are invited to meals; and transatlantic calls bring a $784 phone bill. The arrival of strange gifts from his friends further destroys domestic tranquility. It would take a stoical housewife to harbor penguins in her library, an octopus in her cellar, and 10,000 cockroaches in her kitchen. When Maggie, his secretary, falls in love with the reporter, Bert Jefferson, Whiteside summons a glamorous actress, Lorraine, to win the affections of the young man. Knowing the girl's charms, Maggie enlists the aid of a clever impersonator who, affecting the voice of Lord Bottomley, whom the actress hopes to marry, asks her by phone to return to him and be married. The ruse almost works, but Whiteside, becoming suspicious, finds that no calls have come through from London. In revenge, Lorraine suggests a three-week rewrite on a play of Bert's in which she feigns great interest. Lake Placid is to furnish the quiet for his inspiration, and she is to be his collaborator. The unexpected arrival of a mummy case, just as the relenting Whiteside is frantically seeking to get rid of Lorraine, furnishes a malicious idea. Tricking her into stepping into the case, he shuts the lid and blackmails his host into having the case carried to the airport, preparatory to a round-the-world cruise. Whiteside departs from the Stanley's home triumphantly, but a second later a crash is heard—he has again slipped and fallen!

From Jeff & Kelly

Some of you already know; others may not have heard… but we have been in the process of adopting. We started this trek one year ago right after Anything Goes closed. After a lot of work in training classes, home studies, and mountains of paperwork, we were approved and started to search for a child in July. While there are many different forms of adoption, we have always been committed to adopting out of foster care. In the fall of last year, we identified a set of brothers living in Connecticut – Jonathan (age 9) and Jordan (age 6). In November we flew up and met the kids and interviewed with a team of social workers and support professionals. The next week we were selected as the family to adopt the kids. Since then, we have traveled to Connecticut about every two weeks to visit the boys. Fast forward to today.... We just received final approval from the NC interstate office. The boys can now move to NC. As you can imagine, we are very excited. It has been a lot of work and a rollercoaster of emotion, but we feel so fortunate and blessed to bring these two very special boys into our family. They are great kids and we can’t wait for you all to meet them. Hey... anyone doing Oliver?? We so appreciate all the caring thoughts and prayers.

Wow!!!

How do you describe it? Phrases like "best ever" seems to negate all the others that have come before. But there needs to be a special way to describe an evening as exciting as tonight! That perfect moment when the hard work of over 50 people joins with hundreds of enthusiastic audience members to create enough energy to light up the city.

It was brilliant, inspiring and just downright entertaining and loads of fun!

I am so proud of all involved.

Not GET BUSY! This is one that we don't want people to miss. E-mail, call, send carrier pigeons to everybody that you know and tell them that they have only two more chances - Saturday at 8 and Sunday at 2.

See you at the theatre!
