SMOKE ON THE MOUNTAIN uses 27 standard bluegrass /gospel songs. The actors who play the Sanders Family must be able to sing and play these songs – they are the only musicians in the production. Piano, guitar and string bass are used in most songs – banjo, fiddle, autoharp, ukulele and harmonica are instruments that can be added depending on the actors’ skills. The actress playing June plays hand-held percussion instruments.
All those auditioning will be taught the melody and/or harmony lines to a gospel song. No prepared audition piece is required. If you play any of the above instruments, please prepare a short selection in the bluegrass/gospel style for your audition. There will be no dance audition.
