Hi All,
We might as well finish out the summer with another contest. Use the comments link at the bottom of this post to share your best very near, somewhat near, sorta-kinda near, or dang I just missed them brushes with the famous or infamous. The comments link is found between the clock and the email envelope link at the bottom of each post.
The goal is that the stories have SOME basis in reality - preferably backed up by photos or witnesses. You may share the stories in whatever way you wish - all at once or spread out over the course of the contest. If you have any pictures to share of your near brush with fame, email them to me. I can add them to this post -but pics can't be added to the comments section.
You need to have a free google acoount and password to play - u can get that up top at the register/log-in link. If your real name isn't obvious from your user name, please include your real name in the text of your post.
I have a really cool prize for the winner (and no I am not competing) :-O
The judging fot this contest will be done by me and MaryAnn Luedtke who hobnobs with the famous ALL the time. Our decision will be totally subjective (probably the one that makes us laugh the most) and there will be no questioning of the judges' decisions. So there!
Enjoy! Oh - and btw - Lee Willard does NOT count as famous or infamous - so you can have brushed him as much as u wanted to but it doesn't count.
Entries will be accepted from today until September 30th.
Feel free to email me @ jblevins@hpcommunitytheatre.org with any questions - or post them in the comment section.
Good luck to all! Enjoy! Get busy!

ReplyDeleteBrush 1 - In 1975ish, after hanging around the Greensboro Coliseum stage door for an hour, I got to shake hands and get a hug from .... wait for it.... John Denver. OMG I was thrilled. Somewhere I have the signed concert program.
Brush 2- In 1982, I was sitting in a Broadway theatre watching friend-turned-famous Terre Mann perform Rum Tum Tugger in Cats when suddenly he comes running out into the house, snatches me up to dance with him! My Broadway debut!
More to come!
1) When I went to NCSA's summer program, Sissy Spacek's daughter was also attending (her name is Schuyler Fisk, and she's also done some movies). She and my roommate became friends, and on the last day, I was walking my roommate to her car, and we saw Schuyler and her family, so we went up to say goodbye. Sissy Spacek held out her hand and said "Hi, I'm Schuyler's mom." She was very short.
ReplyDelete2) Jane Seymour came into the gallery where I worked. I was pricing jewelry, and I heard someone come in. Then someone with an English accent asked me "Did you make these?" I looked up, and there she was, Dr. Quinn. I said no, and promptly started to freak out inside, and went back to pricing jewelry, trying to remain calm. She was also very short, and she didn't buy anything.
At 1:00 AM on New Year's Day in 1987 wy wife and I and then 10 year old daughter and eight year old son were celebrating at "The Hoopdy-doo Revue" during our first trip to Disney World when we turned and saw the Rev. Jesse Jackson surrounded by a large group of people. I said to no one in particular that we should go up and get his autograph and talk to him. Without a word my daughter, exhibiting all her yet-to-be-discovered spunk, calmly walked up to Jesse Jackson and asked him to sign the back of her Hoopdy-doo menu. He wrote, "Peace! 1/1/87
ReplyDeleteJesse Jackson". I've got it right in front of me.
My dad was a DJ, so occasionally celebrities would come to the radio stations where he worked. I have met a few celebrities along the way: LL Cool J (he held me when I was a toddler!), Nelly Furtado, Lance & Joey from NSYNC, comedian Sinbad, Max Weinberg (the drummer/band leader for the Conan O'Brien show), probably others that I'm forgetting... but the coolest celeb story I have is when I got to go to a Blink182 concert in Atlanta, hang out with them backstage and sit on the stage during the concert! I also got one of those little shadow box things that they get when their album goes platinum or whatever... it's a big framed box thing with their album cover art and the CD and it has a little plaque that says something along the lines of "Presented to Heather Sykes (my maiden name) in commemoration of Blink182's album Enema of the State reaching Platinum status" I also met Chris Daughtry when I was dressed as Snow White for the opening of the new Shops at Friendly. My husband met him later asked him if he remembered me and he said he did and that I was hot! I'm actually more proud of that than sitting on the stage at the Blink182 concert... hahaha!
ReplyDeleteFrom Marcia James....
ReplyDeleteFlash back....way, WAY back, to fall 1970. I'm a freshman at Furman University in Greenville, SC, totally skinny with nearly waist-length straight brown hair & John Lennon-type glasses, wearing my super cool bell-bottom pants.
Every Wednesday morning, the whole school was required to attend a convocation assembly at the auditorium on campus. The speaker that day was Billy Graham. Media cameras, etc., were everywhere. I remember that Billy (we're good friends, I call him Billy) had just had throat surgery and was wearing a large bandage on his neck. As a close buddy of one of the university's religion professors, he had promised a long time before to come to Furman on this date, and so he came....he said during his speech, "I always keep my promises."
ANYWAY, he was just wonderful as you can imagine. After his talk, which even included an altar call, I headed to the student center with several other kids to check my mail. We were walking through Furman's infamous rose garden (the shortest way to the student center) when I heard footsteps behind me. It was Billy, sans any entourage, headed in the same direction. He grinned and took the time to visit, genuinely tickled to be with us and genuinely interested in what we, a group of young college students, had to say. I was so impressed by his down-to-earth and kind demeanor. Don't know how he "escaped" from all the official representative-type people, but he loved walking along and sharing himself with us!
For years & years I have continued to admire Billy Graham for his spotless character, his unwavering faith, and his emphasis on strong values (even in this day and age!) I read to keep up with how he's getting along, always hope he's doing well, and I feel like I truly know him. For example, I was glad to hear today that he has just been released from the hospital!
Well, that's my story.
Marcia
