Will you be HPCT's WINGS?

We want to invite you to join a very special group of friends, the High Point Community Theatre Wings.

Wings is a way for you to show your support for HPCT and help us to continue to bring quality theater training and performances to the people of High Point.

The name of the group has a number of inspirations:

• The Wings are the areas of a theater to the sides of the stage, unseen by the audience, but a place where the supporting crew does its work.
• To be waiting in the Wings is to be ready to come on and prepared to do your part, available when needed.
• To take somebody under your Wing is to mentor and protect that person, so that he or she can grow.
• To Wing it is to improvise, to see what’s needed and jump in to fix a situation that needs attention.
• “Wind Beneath My Wings” is a song sung by Bette Midler that, while sort of sappy, expresses the kind of support that HPCT needs from all who love the organization.

This group needs to be all of the above, but mostly HPCT needs you to help us soar!

Membership dues:

$25.00 Annual Fee – Adults
$15.00 Annual Fee – Students

Here are the perks of membership …

• Your name in the Playbill and on our Web site, recognizing you as a supporter of High Point Community Theatre
• The chance to attend an open rehearsal and reception during the rehearsal period of each show
• Buy one ticket and get one ticket free* for the Friday night performance (or first Friday performance if there are two weekends) of each show, with an onstage meet and greet and photo with the cast after the show. Adult Wings members get one free adult ticket with their purchase of an adult ticket and students get one free student ticket with their purchase of a student ticket.
• Invitation to an Upcoming Season Announcement Party in late May
• The knowledge that you are making a real commitment to the financial health of HPCT

*The cost of membership is substantially less than the cost of these free tickets!

Don't Forget! Joseph Auditions This Weekend!

High Point Community Theatre announces auditions for the 2nd production of its 2009-2010 season, Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable. Joseph, his father's favorite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances from Potiphar's wife lands him in jail. When news of Joseph's gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh (wryly and riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his brothers, having suffered greatly, unknowingly find themselves groveling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize. After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself leading to a heartfelt reconciliation of the sons of Israel. Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock 'n' roll, this Old Testament tale emerges both timely and timeless.

A pre-audition workshop will be held on Sunday, December 6th, 2009 at 7:00 pm. At this workshop, those auditioning can learn more about the audition, rehearsal and performance process and will have the opportunity to go over their audition selection with the musical director and accompanist.

Auditions will be held on Monday, December 7, and Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at 7:00 pm. Those 14 and under will be taught a short song. Those over 14 should prepare a short song and bring sheet music in the proper key. An accompanist will be provided.

The pre-audition workshop and auditions will be held at the HPCT rehearsal space, 305 North Main Street, Suite 322 in High Point. Parking and entrance are in the rear of the building off of English Drive.

Joseph will be performed at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church on March 11, 12, 13, 18, 19 & 20, 2010 at 7:30 pm and will be directed by Bobby Bodford with musical direction by Michael Dougherty and choreography by Mallory Graham.

Tonight is Nonprofit Appreciation Night!

The High Point Area Arts Council would like to show appreciation for all of the staff, board members, and volunteers of area nonprofits by inviting you to a free jazz concert tonight, Wednesday, October 21, at Arts on Main! Just tell the person at the door that you are an HPCT volunteer and they will waive the cover charge.

Tonight is the last of five nights of live jazz at Arts on Main at 305 N. Main Street. Left of Blue featuring Blue Murrow will be playing from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Blue was born in High Point, home of John Coltrane. Blue has been inspired by a wide variety of musicians, Elizabeth Cotton, Nina Simone and Doc Watson, all North Carolina natives.

Sit back and listen to jazz in a creative environment while drinking your favorite beverages (wine, beer, soda, coffee) and enjoying desserts by Taste Sensations of High Point. In addition to the music, there is an art gallery where you can view and purchase original artwork!

There is plenty of parking in the lot behind the building off English Road.

Arts on Main is open tonight from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. There is a $10 cover charge but folks associated with area nonprofits will be admitted free tonight! All proceeds from this fund-raising event benefits the arts in High Point.

NCSF needs some volunteers Sept 28th

The North Carolina Shakespeare Festival needs some volunteers for the dedication of their Shakespeare statue on Monday, September 28 at Spirit Center - corner of West Green & Ward Avenue in High Point.

They need 6-8 people who can be with them from about 5-8 pm. The food will be fabulous!

The first hour will be a costume fitting and an info session. After that you would mainly man spaces in the building and tell patrons who might tour the space what the space the volunteer oversees is about.

Email me at jblevins@hpcommunitytheatre.org if you are interested and I will pass your contact info to Pedro Silva.

Thanks - hope that some of you are available to support NCSF!

HPCT Support Group

Hi Friends,

HPCT will be starting a support group - no, not that kind of support group - but a guild, booster's club kind of support group. This group will have a small annual fee (with a student discount) and members will get ticket discounts, invitations to social events, a yearly season kick-off party, among other benefits. We want this group to me made up of the most important people to HPCT - our family of company members and those people in the area who truly love to be involved in theatre.

Now - what I need from you. A name! You are all some of the most creative people I know so put your thinking caps on. All submissions must be in by Sunday, September 13th and the final decision will be made at the HPCT Board Meeting the following day. The person with the winning submission will be given a free membership to the 2009-2010 HPCT_____ (fill in the blank with the winning name).

Email your submission to jblevins@hpcommunitytheatre.org

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber
Lyrics by Tim Rice
Based on the story of Joseph in the Book of Genesis

Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with its’ plot taken from the Book of Genesis, tells the story of Joseph, son of Jacob and the owner of the storied “coat of many colors.” The Narrator tells the story of Joseph (“a dreamer like you”) to a group of children, enlisting the help of Joseph and his brothers, Potiphar and Pharaoh, among others. With universal themes of forgiveness and hope, along with catchy and moving tunes such as “Jacob and Sons,” “Any Dream Will Do,” “Go, Go, Go Joseph” and “Close Every Door,” this upbeat musical entertains so well you’ll never realize it’s also teaching a lesson. HPCT’s performance in the beautiful sanctuary of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church will be an experience not to be missed.

Nunsense
Music, lyrics and book by Dan Goggin

Nunsense tells the story of five of the remaining few Little Sisters of Hoboken (the others perished due to a tainted vichyssoise prepared by their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God). Faced with the necessity of raising money to pay for the burials of their deceased sisters, the nuns decide to mount a musical variety show to cover the costs. The performance—featuring songs such as “The Biggest Ain’t the Best,” “Tackle That Temptation With a Time Step,” “The Dying Nun Ballet” and “Nunsense is Habit-Forming,”—is slightly unorthodox, and entirely hilarious.

From the High Point Area Arts Council...

Something worth doing is worth doing again, so join us for the next Go Out For Art event on Thursday, August 20, at the new Dan Thai Jazz Bistro at 1116 Eastchester Drive in the Center Stage Shopping Center in High Point. Call 889-3896 to make dinner reservations. Come early and enjoy Thai Orchid Martini specials at the bar from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. or stay late to partake in champagne and dessert specials after 9:00 p.m.

Thank you to our Friends of the Arts who came out on July 16 to support the first Go Out for Art event in High Point at the Dan Thai Jazz Bistro ... the food, the jazz and the fellowship were great. Ten percent of that night's gross was contributed to the United Arts Fund Drive!

Restaurant owner, Dan Doby, is a performing artist himself having acted in movies, and on television and stage. We want to express a special thank you to Mr. Doby for partnering with the Arts Council to raise awareness of the arts and generate much needed revenue for arts programs in High Point!

So, meet up with friends and enjoy an evening of smooth jazz with like minded folks on August 20. Along with great food, there will be live jazz. The Dan Thai Jazz Bistro serves Thai, Japanese, French, and Fusion cuisine created by Chef "Jackie" Teatong of Bangkok. And the restaurant's décor complements the music and food for a dining experience that satisfies all of your appetites!
